Dipsomania is a historical term used to describe a medical condition characterized by an uncontrollable craving for alcohol or other drugs. The term was most prevalent in the 19th century, when it was used to encompass a wide range of alcohol-related problems, which today would be diagnosed as Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD).
The word dipsomania comes from the Greek words “dipso” (thirst) and “mania” (madness). It was used to describe a condition of periodic, intense cravings for alcohol, followed by episodes of heavy drinking.
The term “dipsomania” is no longer in technical use. Today, the conditions previously described as dipsomania are generally referred to as part of Alcohol Dependence Syndrome
