Donnan Membrane Equilibrium

Also known as “Gibbs-Donnan equation”, this is a steady-state condition observed with two solutions separated by a semipermeable membrane, one containing a protein that won’t pass through the membrane and both containing ions permeable to the membrane; when equilibrium is reached, there’s an unequal distribution of diffusible ions in the two solutions and measurable osmotic pressure even at equilibrium; this phenomenon is observed in capillary beds and other places in the body.
