1: (statistical) The number of independent quantities in a set of numerical quantities. 2: (Gibbs’ phase rule) The number of independent variables that must be fixed in order to define or describe a system under study. 3: (Lagrange’s dynamics) Each free particle in space has three degrees of freedom that are reduced by the number of stable bonds between the particles.
