Chilosis

Angular stomatitis seen in riboflavin deficiency and other B-complex deficiencies.

Chilosis, also known as angular cheilitis or perlèche, refers to an inflammatory condition that affects the corners of the mouth. It’s characterized by:

  • Cracking: The most noticeable symptom is cracks at the corners of the mouth. These cracks can be painful and sometimes bleed.
  • Inflammation: The affected area may be red, swollen, and irritated.
  • Scaling and Crusting: Dry, flaky skin and crusting can also develop around the cracks.

Causes: Several factors can contribute to chilosis, including:

  • Nutritional deficiencies: Deficiencies in iron, riboflavin (vitamin B2), or vitamin B6 can make you more susceptible.
  • Dehydration: Dryness can worsen existing cracks.
  • Infection: Fungal or bacterial infections can sometimes be a cause.
  • Irritants: Constant irritation from saliva, licking the lips, or using harsh topical products can contribute.
  • Underlying medical conditions: Certain conditions like Crohn’s disease or Down syndrome may increase the risk.
