Blumberg’s Sign

Rebound tenderness indicating inflammation of the peritoneum (the membrane lining the abdominal cavity)

Blumberg’s Sign, also known as rebound tenderness, is a clinical sign which a doctor or healthcare provider may check for when a patient presents with abdominal pain. It’s used to assess whether there’s inflammation in the peritoneum, the membrane that lines the abdominal cavity and covers the abdominal organs.

Here’s how it works:

  1. The healthcare provider will gently press on the patient’s abdomen in the area where they’re experiencing pain.
  2. The provider then quickly releases the pressure.
  3. If the patient experiences pain upon the release of pressure, this is considered a positive Blumberg’s Sign.

The reason this happens is because when the peritoneum is inflamed (a condition known as peritonitis), it becomes very sensitive to movement or pressure changes. When the pressure is released quickly, the peritoneum snaps back into place, causing pain.
