Acholuric

Describes being ‘Without bile in urine’, a condition where there is no bile in the urine.

The term “Acholuric” is derived from the Greek words “a-”, meaning “without”, “cholē”, meaning “bile”, and “ouron”, meaning “urine”. So, “Acholuric” literally means “without bile in urine”.

In a healthy body, bile is produced by the liver and stored in the gallbladder. It helps in the digestion of fats and the removal of waste products from the body. When the liver breaks down old red blood cells, one of the byproducts is a substance called bilirubin, which is excreted in the bile.

However, in certain conditions, such as liver diseases or blockages in the bile ducts, the bile can’t be excreted normally. Instead, it can end up in the bloodstream and then get filtered out by the kidneys into the urine, causing the urine to turn a dark color. This is known as “choluria”.
On the other hand, “acholuric” refers to a condition where there is no bile in the urine.

This could be due to the body properly processing and excreting bile, or it could be a sign of a problem with bile production. If a person has acholuric jaundice, for example, it means they have jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), but without the presence of bile in the urine. This is often due to an issue with the breakdown or production of red blood cells, rather than a problem with the liver or bile ducts.
