A primary alcohol is an organic compound in which the hydroxyl (-OH) group is attached to a carbon atom that is bonded to either a hydrogen atom or only one other carbon atom. This means that the carbon atom carrying the hydroxyl group is only linked to one other carbon atom or is not linked to any other carbon atom at all. An example of a primary alcohol is ethanol (CH3CH2OH), where the hydroxyl group (-OH) is attached to a carbon atom that is bonded to three hydrogen atoms and one other carbon atom.
