Aerosol, Foam

“Aerosol Foam” is a type of emulsion that contains one or more active ingredients, surfactants, aqueous or nonaqueous liquids, and propellants. The nature of the foam that is discharged depends on the phase in which the propellant is present:

1. If the propellant is in the internal (discontinuous) phase, i.e., of the oil-in-water type, a stable foam is discharged. This means that the oil droplets (containing the propellant) are dispersed in the continuous water phase.

2. If the propellant is in the external (continuous) phase, i.e., of the water-in-oil type, a spray or a quick-breaking foam is discharged. In this case, the water droplets are dispersed in the continuous oil phase (containing the propellant).

This technology is often used in pharmaceutical and cosmetic products to deliver active ingredients effectively.
