Acridines

Acridines are a group of tricyclic, nitrogen-containing, aromatic heterocycles. They play a significant role in various medicinal applications. A number of therapeutic agents are based on the acridine nucleus, such as quinacrine (antimalarial), acriflavine and proflavine (antiseptics), ethacridine (abortifacient), amsacrine and nitracine (anticancer), and tacrine.

These compounds are known to exhibit diverse bioactivities such as antimicrobial, antifungal, antitumor, cytotoxic, anticancer, and multidrug-resistant actions. They are also widely prescribed as calcium ?-blockers.

Acridine derivatives have been synthesized and clinically used as anthelmintic, antimalarial, and antibacterial agents. Some acridine derivatives used as drugs inhibit the ability of bacteria and malaria parasites to synthesize DNA and RNA.
