The accumulation and elimination of homogentisic acid in the urine is a result of a genetic disorder affecting the metabolism of phenylalanine and tyrosine. This condition is known as Alkaptonuria. It’s a rare inherited condition where the body cannot fully break down two amino acids, phenylalanine and tyrosine, leading to a buildup of homogentisic acid. This excess acid is then eliminated through the urine.
