Aldol Condensation

Definition of Aldol Condensation from the PharmacyDictionary.in

Aldol Condensation

Aldol condensation is a reaction in which two molecules of an aldehyde or ketone combine to form a larger molecule, specifically a beta-hydroxyaldehyde or beta-hydroxyketone. This reaction occurs under the influence of a dilute base or acid. The name “aldol condensation” is derived from the fact that the product of this reaction is often an aldol (aldehyde + alcohol), and these aldols can undergo a subsequent condensation reaction to form a larger molecule with the elimination of a water molecule. This reaction is a fundamental tool in organic chemistry, allowing for the synthesis of complex molecules from simpler ones.
