Apneumia

Definition of Apneumia from the PharmacyDictionary.in

Apneumia

This term refers to the congenital absence of the lungs.

Apneumia refers to the congenital absence of lungs. This is a very rare and serious condition that is not compatible with life. A fetus with apneumia will not be able to survive outside the womb because it will not be able to breathe on its own.

The prefix “a-” in apneumia means “without” or “absence of,” and “pneumonia” refers to the lungs. So, literally, apneumia means “without lungs.”

There are two main types of apneumia:

  • Complete apneumia: This is the most severe form of the condition, in which there is a complete absence of lung tissue.
  • Partial apneumia: In this form, there is some lung tissue present, but it is not fully developed or functional.
