This is a ligase enzyme that catalyzes the formation of glutathione. Deficient activity of this enzyme can lead to decreased levels of glutathione and increased levels of 5-oxoproline and cysteine. If this deficiency is confined to erythrocytes, it can result in well-compensated hemolytic anemia.
