Hemiataxia
Synonyms or meaning of Hemiataxia
A condition characterized by a lack of muscle coordination (ataxia) on one side of the body.
Hemiataxia is a neurological condition that causes incoordination and lack of balance on one side of the body. It’s a symptom of an underlying problem in the part of the brain that controls movement, the cerebellum.
The cerebellum is located at the back of the brain, just above the brainstem. It’s like the body’s coordination center, constantly fine-tuning muscle movements to ensure smoothness. When something disrupts the cerebellum’s function on one side, the muscles on the opposite side of the body are affected.
Here are some of the symptoms of hemiataxia:
- Difficulty walking or walking unsteadily
- Clumsy hand movements on one side
- Slurred speech
- Trouble swallowing
- Dizziness
Hemiataxia can be caused by a variety of conditions, including:
- Stroke
- Brain tumor
- Multiple sclerosis
- Infection
- Trauma
- Vitamin deficiency
