Hepatization

Synonyms or meaning of Hepatization

The transformation into a liver-like mass, especially the solidified state of the lungs in lobar pneumonia. The early stage, called red hepatization, is when the pulmonary exudate is blood-stained. The later stage, called gray hepatization, is when the red cells disintegrate and a fibrinosuppurative exudate persists.
