Synonyms or meaning of Hypercythemia
This term refers to a condition where there is an excess of red blood cells in the blood.
Hypercythemia, also sometimes spelled hypercythemia, refers to a condition where you have an excess of red blood cells in your bloodstream. Another term for this condition is polycythemia.
Normally, your body carefully regulates the number of red blood cells it produces. Red blood cells are essential for carrying oxygen throughout your body. But when there are too many, your blood becomes thicker and can slow down circulation. This thicker blood can lead to various health problems.
There are two main types of hypercythemia:
- Primary polycythemia (polycythemia vera): This is a rare blood cancer where your bone marrow makes too many red blood cells due to a gene mutation. The cause of this mutation is unknown.
- Secondary polycythemia: This is more common and occurs when something else triggers your body to produce too many red blood cells. Common causes include:
- High altitude: Your body produces more red blood cells to compensate for the lower oxygen levels.
- Certain medical conditions: These can include sleep apnea, kidney disease, or some tumors.
- Smoking: Smoking can increase red blood cell production.
- Dehydration: This can make your blood appear thicker due to a decrease in fluid volume.
Symptoms of hypercythemia can include:
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
- Itchy skin
- Shortness of breath
- Redness of the face
- Vision problems
