A condition in which a person cannot ingest lactose without experiencing troubling gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea and bloating. It may be primary (due to the natural loss of lactase with aging) or secondary (due to any disease or medication that temporarily or permanently destroys the lactase-producing microvilli of the small intestine)
