Lochiometra

A condition where the uterus is enlarged due to retained lochia.

Lochiometra is a condition that can happen after a woman gives birth. Normally, after childbirth, a woman’s body produces a kind of wound secretion called “lochia” which consists of blood, mucus, and other elements. This secretion normally flows out of the uterus.

However, in the case of lochiometra, this secretion doesn’t flow out as it should and gets retained or stuck in the uterus. This causes the uterus to become distended or pushed out of shape. It’s like when a water balloon gets too full and starts to stretch.

This condition can cause symptoms like a decrease or stop in the postpartum discharge, heaviness and abdominal pain, enlargement of the uterus, and fever.
